Sofas that can be unfolded are very popular in our homes. The additional function allowing to transform our sofa into a comfortable bed in a quick and easy way undoubtedly constitutes an additional asset appreciated and desired by many users. However, the factor you should pay attention to before choosing a sofa with a folding function is its mechanism. The sofa’s unfolding system not only affects the usability process, but also has a great impact on the comfort and quality of our sleep.
DL SYSTEM
Examples of sofa beds that use the DL system are Lago and Melow. The DL unfolding mechanism is very simple as it consists in pulling out part of the seat and then folding the backrest. In this way we obtain an even sleeping surface. A big advantage of sofas with the DL system is that there is no need to move the furniture away from the wall during the unfolding process. This system is very popular due to its quick operation and large sleeping surface. An additional advantage of this sofa is the possibility to hide bedding in a designated container under the seats. The only disadvantage of this way of unfolding the sofa is a depression running through the middle where the seat part joins the backrest part. In well-designed sofas, however, this division is sometimes barely noticeable.
THE BELGIAN SYSTEM
The Enzo sofa is an example of the Belgian folding system also known as Sedak. Due to its construction and shape, this system resembles field beds. The process of unfolding the sofa is relatively simple, it consists only in pulling out the folded inside construction hidden in a compartment under the seat, and then unfolding the whole by resting the frame elements on the unfolding legs. The resulting bed is a steel or aluminum structure covered with a foam mattress. Due to the fact that the space under the seats is filled with the folded structure, sofas in the Belgian system do not have additional space for storing bed linen. The resulting sleeping surface is even and comfortable. However, since the construction is relatively light, it may not be the best solution for heavy people.
THE ITALIAN SYSTEM
The Italian system is a mechanism for unfolding the sofa, which we used in the creation of the Munro model. Unfolding a piece of furniture that uses this system is extremely easy and the whole operation takes no more than a few seconds. Transforming the sofa into a bed is limited to pulling the handle located behind the seat part, which reveals the structure placed inside. A double-sided mattress is attached to the metal frame using clips. The resulting sleeping surface is extremely comfortable. Thanks to the comfortable mattress you can forget that you are sleeping on a sofa.
THE DOLPHIN SYSTEM
The Dolphin system belongs to one of the most popular and most frequently used mechanisms used in corner sofas. An example of furniture which uses this unfolding system is the Moor corner sofa. An unquestionable advantage of the Dolphin system is its quick and easy mechanism. When unfolding the sofa, all you have to do is to pull out the seat bottom located on wheels and then pull up the supplementary element of the sleeping surface. A part of the corner sofa contains a storage compartment for bed linen, which provides additional space. The resulting sleeping surface is characterized by high comfort and gives the user a very large space to sleep. Another advantage of the design is its stability and the fact that the sofa does not need to be moved away from the wall when unfolding.
